Description
This lot consists of three dolls that were manufactured in Japan and France (?) circa the 1930s. They belonged to a young doll collector who collected dolls from the 1930s into the early 1940s.The ethnic nearly 6" celluloid doll
with a brown mohair wig is jointed at her arms and legs.
When I felt her torso, I discovered that it is broken.
She is made entirely of celluloid and comes with a paper slip that records her having come from the 1939 World's Fair. She appears to have been manufactured in France, though I am only conjecturing. Her costuming sustains wear and soil from age and storage. Its right sleeve is missing its yarn embellishment, its slip's hem is poorly sewn, and her thighs sustain red paint spots from the painting of her stockings. Her hat has been pinned to her celluloid head.
The 6 1/4" swaddling baby
may have originally been designed as a pin cushion. Her celluloid head and hands have been sewn into its softly stuffed satin cloth cushion portion. Her torso and legs are not present, indicating that the doll may have been a creative solution to salvage her upper body parts. Her face is speckled and there are pinholes on both sides of her head.
The final African American 3 1/2" baby
was manufactured in Japan. She is jointed at her shoulders and thighs. Though her stringing is loose, she may be perfectly sized for a dollhouse setting.
All three dolls are appealing though they may require cleaning and restoration.
